From a young age, Rosselló developed a sincere interest in public policy and government decision-making processes, understanding since then the positive effects of good public policy on a jurisdiction and its people. With that experience acquired and in full intellectual development, Dr. Rosselló Nevares also began to become involved in various political campaigns at local and national levels.
As part of his interest in public policy issues and government decision-making processes, in 2012, Dr. Rosselló Nevares, published his first book called “Un mejor Puerto Rico, es posible”, in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), which analyzes how the condition of Puerto Rico under its current political system (Commonwealth) affects the social and economic development of the island.
Dr. Rosselló Nevares has been characterized as a fervent defender of statehood for Puerto Rico, as a definitive solution to the colonial situation of the Island; which has led him to participate and lead various initiatives that promote this ideal. In 2012, Rosselló founded the “Boricua, Ahora Es” movement during a referendum campaign in a mission to raise awareness of the importance of achieving a fair political definition for Puerto Rico and to urge Puerto Ricans to vote in favor of statehood. On November 6, 2012, for the first time in the history of Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans chose statehood as their preferred political status.
On June 8, 2016, Dr. Rosselló Nevares, prevailed in the New Progressive Party (PNP) Primaries, and became the official candidate to aspire for the governorship of Puerto Rico. On November 8th, 2016 Dr. Ricardo Rosselló Nevares won the Puerto Rico general elections and became the 12th Governor of Puerto Rico in January 2, 2017.
